The Games We Play…

“What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”

“What?” Donna asked a bit too surprised as she heard her husband break their morning silence. Daryl snapped back into the present, looking away from the spider web that glistened as it refracted the morning sun in the dew caught in its webs.

“Oh, nothing. I was just musing over the old axiom.” He pointed out their large panel window in the breakfast nook at the garden just beyond. “That spider web caught my attention.”

Donna slowed her breathing, realizing he wasn’t making any accusations, and yet her pulse was racing. “O…oh. Yes.” She feigned a smile as a touch of remorse ate at her. “The spider web.” Just then, her phone buzzed on the table.

Daryl looked over at her as she looked at her phone.

Meet me tonight at 8?

“Who’s that?” He asked as she quickly hide the phone and typed back, Absolutely!!!

“Work. Why do you ask?”

Just as he was about to answer, his phone buzzed on the table.

    1. Funny thing about this story, I wrote it so that it posed the question, are they both cheating with other people, or… are they cheating on each other with each other? I didn’t want to answer that question, because, well, I enjoy letting the reader decide (although, in my head, I know what’s going on.)

  1. Definitely one of my favourites this week. And I kind of do see where you are going with it. How difficult is it really to meet someone online and only realise you know them when you meet in person? One way or the other, there’s a surprise or two waiting for them somewhere down the road…
