In a month dedicated to the art of world building, we have had some great articles come out covering a vast array of technique and minutiae. But, as tends to be my way, I want to turn this world building idea on its side. Or rather, put it under a microscope and delve down deep into the world of city building.

Ok, I’m not talking about SimCity or Cities: Skylines… albeit, great games if you haven’t played them. No, I’m talking about those wondrous creations that have become the place of epic stories unto themselves.

Waterdeep. Neverwinter. Baldur’s Gate. Undercity.

Oh? Never heard of Undercity? That’s okay, it’s still in the development phase. But, due to it being the home for a book of short stories I am working on, I thought that I would share with you some of the fun (and hair pulling) that has come from this process.

  1. Nice. I did go and read the whole thing. World building is why I never could write an entire book. Short stories were enough for me. ^_^

    I’m building a dungeon with the Skyrim creation kit right now… it’s not as complicated as building a city, but it is a learning experience. Ha!

    1. Between Cities:Skyline, Minecraft, and a few other builder games that I have wasted countless years in, I have to admit I hate building stuff too. I’m with you in the short story thing. But, it is fun to dabble.

        1. Quota is another way of saying, there has to be so much. And that quote (different from quota) is more a saying because there always seems to be at least ‘one of those guys’ in every group. If you aren’t sure who ‘that guy’ is, chances are, you’re him. 😀

  2. I’m laughing really hard, Todd 😀
    (You have no idea how many times I don’t read the words properly :D. We use that word in Spanish (cuota).
    And I’m not that guy (but I guess I could be. I’ve seen myself defending the indefensible a few times (or as I prefer to call it, in the really small minority) 😀
